Common Questions

We've heard it all — here are the answers.

Still have a question after reading? Text or call us — we're happy to chat before you commit to a visit.

Most patients feel little to no discomfort during needle insertion. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin (roughly the diameter of a human hair) and nothing like a hypodermic injection needle.

You may feel a mild sensation when a needle reaches its target point: a brief ache, heaviness, warmth, or tingling. This is called de qi, and it's actually a sign that the point is responding. Most people find the overall experience deeply relaxing and often fall asleep on the table.

It depends on the condition and how long it has been present. Acute issues (recent injury, sudden onset pain) often respond within 2–4 sessions. Chronic conditions that have developed over months or years typically require a longer course, often 6–10 sessions before significant improvement stabilizes.

Your practitioner will give you a realistic estimate at your first visit, along with a recommended frequency. Most patients start with weekly visits and taper as they improve.

Yes, always. We use only sterile, single-use, disposable needles — they are opened in front of you and disposed of immediately after each session in a sharps container. This is required by Illinois state law and standard practice in licensed acupuncture.

Your first visit is 60 minutes. It begins with a thorough intake conversation; your practitioner will ask about your main complaint, health history, sleep, digestion, stress levels, and more. This helps them understand the full picture, not just the symptom you came in for.

After the intake, you'll receive a full acupuncture treatment, followed by a discussion of their findings and a recommended treatment plan. You should leave with a clear sense of what they found and what they recommend.

Yes, acupuncture is safe during pregnancy and is commonly used to address nausea, back pain, pelvic girdle pain, fatigue, and emotional wellbeing throughout all trimesters. Certain points are contraindicated during pregnancy and will be avoided. Please let us know you are pregnant when you book so we can plan accordingly.

Dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists that targets trigger points (tight muscle knots) using acupuncture needles, typically within a Western anatomical framework.

Acupuncture as practiced in TCM uses a broader system of meridians, body constitution, and pattern diagnosis; it addresses the whole system, not just the local site of pain. Many acupuncturists incorporate both local and distal points to treat conditions from a systemic as well as structural standpoint.

Coverage varies significantly by plan. Many major insurers (BCBS, United, Aetna) offer some acupuncture coverage, particularly for pain conditions, but the specifics depend on your individual plan, deductible, and in-network status.

We recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card and asking: "Does my plan cover acupuncture, and is this provider in-network?" We can also provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. FSA and HSA funds can always be used for acupuncture.

Herbal formulas are recommended after a full intake, either at your first acupuncture visit or in a standalone herbal consultation. Your practitioner selects a base formula from classical TCM texts and modifies it to fit your specific pattern; no two formulas are identical.

Herbs are dispensed as granules (dissolve in hot water like tea), capsules, or occasionally raw herbs. Your practitioner will check for interactions with any medications you take before prescribing.

The best way to find out is to text or call us for a free 15-minute phone consultation. We'll ask a few questions about your condition and let you know honestly whether we think acupuncture is a good fit; if not, we'll tell you that too.

"I came to Grace after six months of dealing with chronic lower back pain that wasn't improving with physical therapy alone. From the very first visit, she spent nearly 20 minutes just asking questions — not just about my back, but about my sleep, stress, digestion, even how my energy varied throughout the day. The treatment itself was completely painless and I left feeling looser than I had in months. After five sessions over six weeks, my pain has gone from a daily 7/10 to maybe a 2. I honestly didn't expect acupuncture to work this well."

"I was diagnosed with Bell's palsy and found Family Care Acupuncture after my neurologist mentioned that some patients have success with acupuncture as a complement to the steroids. Grace was incredibly knowledgeable — she explained the TCM perspective on facial nerve issues in a way that made sense, and her needle technique was so precise and gentle that I barely felt a thing. After about eight sessions, my facial movement had recovered significantly faster than my doctor expected. I'm still coming in for maintenance and couldn't be happier with the care I've received here."

"I've been seeing Grace for menstrual irregularity and hormonal imbalance for about four months. What sets her apart is that she doesn't just treat the symptom — she asks about your whole cycle, your stress, your diet, your sleep, and builds a picture before she ever places a needle. She also prescribed a custom herbal formula that I take between sessions. Within two months my cycles became regular for the first time in years. The office is calm and welcoming, scheduling is easy, and I always feel genuinely cared for. This has honestly been one of the best health decisions I've made."

"I came in skeptical — I'm an engineer and not usually drawn to alternative medicine — but a friend's strong recommendation pushed me through the door. I was dealing with chronic stress, tension headaches, and terrible sleep. Grace took one look at my tongue and felt my pulse and started rattling off symptoms I hadn't even mentioned: tight shoulders, afternoon energy crashes, waking between 2–4 AM. I was floored. The treatments themselves are relaxing to the point where I fall asleep every single time. Three weeks in, I'm sleeping through the night and my headaches are way down. I'm a convert."

"I've tried a few different acupuncturists in Chicago over the years, and Grace is by far the most thorough. She remembers every detail from previous sessions, adjusts the treatment based on how I'm feeling that week, and explains what she's doing and why in plain language without being condescending. I originally came in for neck pain from sitting at a computer all day, and we've since also worked on my anxiety and digestion — all of which have improved noticeably. The office is peaceful, clean, and easy to park at. Highly recommend to anyone who's been curious about TCM but wasn't sure where to start."

"My wife started seeing Grace first for digestive issues and kept raving about her, so I finally made an appointment for my knee pain from an old running injury. Within a few sessions using a combination of acupuncture and cupping, the stiffness and aching that had been bothering me for two years started to ease noticeably. What I appreciate most is that Grace is straightforward — she tells you honestly what she thinks will help, how many sessions to expect, and what the realistic outcome looks like. No upselling, no vague promises. Just solid clinical work. We're both regulars now."
